What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is simply the practice of being aware. This may sound simple, but it's far from easy.

You only have to pause for a moment to realise how easily distracted we are. This is a natural part of the human operating system, we've evolved with this wonderfully active mind that scans and and assess our environment to keep us safe.

This isn't a problem if we know we are doing it. However, as we probably know, it's very easy to get washed away with thoughts and thinking, temporarily immersed in the past or future and reliving or imagining all the emotions of it, for better or for worse. Unfortunately this is generally for the worse as our brains have evolved an acute sense of threat detection and tends to focus on the negative.

In fact, our body can't tell the difference between a real situation and an imagined one. So all this time travelling in the mind causes the body excessive stresses in the present.

This is where mindfulness comes in. It's the practice of being present and noticing what is happening right now. It may not seem like much right now, but learning to understand the difference between being present and lost in thought hosts an abundance of benefits.

So mindfulness isn't all about 'clearing the mind' or 'stopping thoughts'. We actually learn how to be in better relationship with them.
